Why Sophomore Year Matters

The Foundation for Junior Year Is Built Now

By sophomore year, students are developing academic interests, extracurricular commitments are taking shape, and the foundation for junior year decisions is forming. Without guidance, these decisions are often made without a clear understanding of how they connect to future opportunities.

The families who treat sophomore year as a strategic window — rather than a placeholder between 9th and 11th grade — arrive at junior year in a fundamentally different position. They have a college list framework, a tested understanding of academic fit, and a student who has had time to genuinely explore their interests.

The result: families entering the critical junior year with clarity, alignment, and confidence — rather than scrambling to define direction under the weight of deadlines.

Who This Is For

The Sophomore Launch program is designed for families with students in Grade 10 who want to move beyond general awareness and begin building an intentional plan.

You may be a family that started with Early Risers and is ready to deepen your strategy. Or you may be joining the process for the first time in 10th grade — aware that junior year is approaching quickly and eager to enter it prepared.

This program is especially valuable for students who are beginning to explore specific areas of academic interest, considering AP or IB coursework, developing extracurricular commitments, or starting to imagine what college might look like — and for the parents who want to support those choices from an informed position.

How It Works

The Sophomore Launch includes structured sessions with the student, with parents, and with the family together — each designed to build the knowledge and strategy needed for junior year and beyond.

  • Defining success — what does the college journey look like for your family?
  • Addressing anxiety and establishing a shared framework
  • Understanding the higher education landscape and how it's changing
  • Demystifying admissions — what colleges actually evaluate
  • Academic counseling — course rigor, GPA, and transcript strategy
  • Extracurricular strategy — depth vs. breadth, leadership, passion
  • Building the student roadmap — a four-year action plan
  • Financial strategy and planning — starting the conversation early

Student Strategy Sessions (3 × 1 hr)

  • Future exploration — imagining life at 25, working backward to now
  • Connecting interests to fields of study and career pathways
  • Experiential learning strategy — internships, programs, service
  • Understanding the world of work and how college connects
  • Strengthening college research skills — going beyond rankings
  • Personal impact — what story does your high school experience tell?
  • Academic advising — choosing courses that reflect goals
  • Building the junior toolkit — preparing for the year ahead

Caregiver Strategy Session (1 × 30 min)

  • Resources for navigating the evolving admissions landscape
  • Clarifying expectations — aligning what you hope for with what's possible
  • Understanding your student's strengths, challenges, and learning style
